New DVD releases: 11 March 2003

I’d say this is a depressing week for DVD releases, but I’m too grateful for the chance to rest my wallet before the glut of TV series releases coming out in the next couple of months. In the meantime, I still have to make exchanges on my BACK TO THE FUTURE and X-FILES discs that are defective. UGH

This reminds me a bit of the current crop of TV shows. We’re in that post-sweeps letdown period, where most everything is reruns. The TiVo is clean now. I get to watch DVDs, instead, and some cool stuff on cable I didn’t have the time for before this.

DVDJournal.com has the comprehenasive list. I have the short one for discs of interest, even if only in a snarky way:

Alias, Betty (2002)

Jennifer Garner’s series on DVD would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it? Imagine it in widescreen with surround sound, anamorphic compression…

Sadly, this isn’t it.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

An early John Carpenter movie, if you’re into that kind of thing. If you’re not, welcome to my club.

Below (2002)

It’s a haunted sub or something. Co-authored by Darren Aranofsky (PI), but otherwise easily forgotten.

I Spy (2002)

Like I said, this is a bad week for DVD releases. If Best Buy were to bundle this together with PLUTO NASH, it still wouldn’t be worth $15.

Lucas (1986)

Corey Haim, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Winonyna Rider, Charlie Sheen. It’s an 80s movie classic, isn’t it? Is it? I have no idea. Someone on IMDB.com likes it a lot, though.

Moonlight Mile (2002)

Another movie tailor-made for Oscar consideration, but never took off. C’mon, it’s got Dustin Hoffman (not playing a retarded guy) Susan Sarandon (not playing a liberal activist) as the parents of a dead daughter who must work their way through the trials and tribulations of their son-in-law falling in love with someone else. Oh, boy, sounds like fun, don’t it?

Could be worse. Could be 8 MILE. That’s next week, though.

My Friend Flicka (1943)
My Life as a Dog: The Criterion Collection (1985)

The combination of those two movies amuses me, for some reason.

Nunsense 3: The Jamboree

At least it’s not a Whoopi Goldberg movie.

Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live

Finally! I may not be a huge Peter Gabriel fan, but I know that this disc will at least prove entertaining and enjoyable.

Sniper 2 (2002)

Was there a need for a second one? Is this straight to video? Good timing, by the way, to have a sniper movie in the year 2002.

Swimfan (2002)

I’m not, no.

Veronika Voss (1982)

Sounds like someone with a bad German accent talking, doesn’t it? “Vere is the vindow viper? Vere is Veronika Voss?”

A Virgin Among the Living Dead (1971)

The punchlines are too easy…

White Oleander (widescreen) (2002)

There were more blondes in this movie than in any one hour of anything since the first episode of the second season of 24. This movie was so bleached out, it’s amazing the actresses didn’t all go bald shortly after filming.

White Oleander (full-frame) (2002)

There, this might cut out some of the goldilocks.

Better luck next week, DVD. (Wait — POKEMON 4EVER is due out next week. Nooooo!)

(Special thanks to Adam for picking up on my tagging blunder. That’s what I get for bouncing back and forth between systems that use [b] and the standard HTML BOLD commands…)

  1. Franklin Harris Says:

“A Virgin Among the Living Dead” is a Jess Franco film. As far as Eurohorror/Eurotrash directors go, Franco is all over the map. Orson Welles loved him, but, nevertheless, Franco’s work is wildly uneven. He is usually at his best when reigned in by a strong producer (like Harry Towers). I’ll wait for the reviews before I decide whether to pick up this disc.

Hey, Below is supposed to be REALLY good. It just got a HORRIBLE theatrical release. I dunno if it was seen ANYWHERE other than film festivals.

And it’s got Zach Galifianakis, dagnabit!!!

And gosh darnit, I like Pokemon, and I didn’t get to see Pokemon4Ever, so I’ll greatly look forward to next week, Mr. PooPants. :P
