Bill Murray as Garfield?

You may have heard that there’s a live-action GARFIELD movie coming. If you haven’t, I’ll give you a moment to shake your head, stare up at the heavens, and ask, “Why? God, Why?!?” It’s OK. It’s what the rest of us did when we first heard.

The thing is, Garfield will be CGI. Odie will be a real live dog. And Jon will have a lady friend played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, if I remember correctly.

But who would voice Garfield? The great Lorenzo Music passed a year or two ago. He did the voice for the big fat cat’s first 20 years of life, including the great Saturday morning animated series.

Ain’t It Cool News is now reporting that Bill Murray will voice the cat. The funny thing is, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. I’m not a cultist Murray fan like so many seem to be. He’s funny in a couple of things, but he doesn’t bowl me over with every line he speaks. Still, I think his voice might work here. We shall see…

And let us not forget, Lorenzo Music was also the voice of Peter Venkman in the classic animated series ‘The Real Ghostbusters’ Peter, for those of you who don’t remember, was played by Bill Murray in the ‘Ghostbusters’ movie. Coincidence or an odd bit of marketing strategy?

ok – now, this movie sounds like a terrible idea. But if you are going to computer generate Garfield – you HAVE to computer generate Odie. I have never seen a dog that looked like Odie, and his ridiculous look is one of the reason I enjoyed the first few years of Garfield….

that was long long ago. And the strip has been pretty awful since then.

But the stupid and lovable Odie should not be replaced by some trick dog.

Well, I’ll go see it because I think Bill Murray is the perfect casting. But I hope and pray that this will not start of a franchise like … brrrr … Scooby Doo.
All in all I’m more excited about the news of Tremendous entertainment getting the rights to Garfield & Friends. A 25th Anniversary Special Cartoon is planned, as well as video (dvds, please!) releases of Garfield & Friends.

In any case, it’ll be neat to hear the new voice of Garfield.

Well, call me an idiot,(don’t really cause it might hurt my feelings) but when I heard that Bill Murray was doing Garfield’s voice in the movie, I was glad because they had “kept it the same”. I thought, up until about 5 minutes ago, that he had always done Garfield’s voice. Oops! I don’t know exactly where the confusion came from. Am I the only one (obviously besides the casting crew at ABC who put Lorenzo Music to work as the voice of Peter from the Ghostbusters)who thought this? Please tell me I’m not alone. :)
