The new BNL single
I heard the debut of the new Barenaked Ladies single on the radio this morning. Not sure of the exact title, but it’s something along the lines of “Postcards of Chimpanzees.” Pirates may be the new monkeys, but there are still some holdouts. ;-)
It’s a pretty decent Weird Al reggae list type of song. It’s a nonsense novelty song, the kind that you might hate but you’ll get stuck in your head and want to hum all day.
Once again, the record company felt the need to release a single with some fast singing in it, a la “One Week” and “Pinch Me.” I was hoping they’d let that one slide with this next album and give us something “straighter” for starters. Instead, it looks like they’re trying to hard to remind us that this is the same band that produced the big breakout hit single, “One Week.” Personally, I skip over “One Week” whenever I come across it on the CD or radio. I’m sick of it. Ditto for “If I Had A Million Dollars,” which the NY State Lottery ran into the ground months ago…
The last album, “Maroon,” was a slightly more serious and “mature” album. If this single represents the rest of the album, it looks like we’re back to the fun-filled clever lyrics of the past. Depending on which you prefer, this may or may not be a good thing. I really like the new single, even if I have a hard time making out half the words.
I’m sure the song has hit Kazaa and all the rest of the filesharing services by now. It doesn’t seem to be up on their web site just yet. Nor is it up on the BNLblog, which says they finished the album a couple of months ago. Should be out soon… This is shaping up to be a pretty decent fall season for music.

I have heard tale that Sept. 19th is National “Talk like a Pirate Day”! This is either a fun truth or someone wants me to make a giant ass out of myself by talking like a Pirate all by myself.
Savvy?
