Friendster

Because I’m so damned hip and with it — and because I obviously now think I’m a NYC resident circa Spring 2003 — I’m now on Friendster. I did it as a favor to a friend, but what the heck. I’m there. Feel free to look me up, add me as a friend, etc. I now want to beat my friend at his own game. heh heh

It’s really annoying to use it to find new friends, though. The web site is so NYC-centric that anytime I look for people within 10 miles of my location, all I get is pages and pages of people from The City. Lotsa Brooklyn people on there…

Eh, it’s mindless fun. It’s also an interesting take on the human condition to see how far people will go with these things. So, yeah, I’ll just chalk this up as an academic experiment. Riiiiight.

Augie is my God for signing up. I’m in a battle-to-the-death with a friend to see who can hit 500,000 people in our personal network first. We won’t cheat, though. We’ll only add people to our network that we’ve met, are friends with or have worked together with. None of this adding the city of Hollywood (there’s a friendster user called Hollywood with like 300 people attached to it) and cheating. That’s bull crap.

Yeah, but I’ll only be a real help if I enlist some of my friends who are not also already in your circle. So far, no go.

Personally, Friendster tells me I already have 260,000+ friends. Truth be told, each and every one of them is already getting on my nervers.

Get off me! I need my space!

    welcome to an evil realm.

Thanks to the NYC improv community my network is huge: “You are connected to 458,469 people in your Personal Network, through 74 friends. “

I added you to my friends list Augie. I just signed up because of a friend myself. I’m not that popular. It makes me feel like that weird girl with pigtails and The Empire Strikes Back T-shirt that kept to herself all over again!

Hello, I’m from the Philippines and have been a regular reader of your CBR column for the past 3-4 years. Anyway, Friendster here is sooooo popular even high school kids use it (They usually place 18 as their age). I’m 24 years old and I only have around 71 people on my Friendster. I actually 4 relatives (younger brother, sister 2 cousins who are brother & sister). I also have alot of old friends and acquiantances from college and high school. The funny thing is, people who I haven’t been touch with since I graduated high school have added me on their friends list.(Meaning I wasn’t in their crowd…same with some of the college people)
I actually even do some of my own searches and I’m quite picky with who to add. I try to get people with whom I’ve been in the same classes with for people from college.
It’s actually replaced ICQ as a way to keep in touch. There’s even a similar program called myspace.

gosh..i hate to admit it but yeah..i am part of the friendster thing people nowadays are crazy about and as much as i want to deny it (heck, i even have a note in my invite list that says…’i might regret having this in the future’!) for reasons that there will be people i do not want to get associated with but will invite me in the future and this i want to avoid. But then again, the friendster.com power gravitated my meek cursor and forced it to click the accept button to my first invitation. Needless to say, the most dreaded thing happened: my ex invited me. Yes, stupid thing to add him..oh well, i barely open it and i didnt dare place my pic in it too…ashamed might be the word for it but really… i am a one big closet friendster fan.
