New releases, 14 October 2003
This ought to be a quick one. I hit all the highlights last week, without intending to. Whoops. Full list courtesy of DVDJournal.com:
The Matrix Reloaded: Special Edition
Must buy. Sure, I could wait for the Super Special Mega-Wow edition that will inevitably come late next year, but I’d rather see this again before the third movie starts up in a few weeks. And I think this one has enough on it to satisfy me.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier: Special Edition
I’ve heard there’s a hidden gag reel on the disc. Some would say the entire movie is a gag reel.
Next week: BATMAN: MYSTERY OF THE BATWOMAN, INDIANA JONES, and does it really matter after that?

Frankly, I have to say that I’m surprised that Paramount is putting out a SPECIAL EDITION of this movie, especially since they haven’t done anything to the film, and most of the commentaries and behind the scenes footage just confirms what we already know - this is the worst of the Trek films. I guess I could understand it if they gave Shatner the chance to refilm/re-edit some of the footage they way he wanted, but just the regular film???? Why????

Is that a typo of “movie” or is Paramount making a good “move” by releasing Star Trek V?
In any case, I sincerely wish Paramount would let Shatner tweak his movie a bit, I figure it couldn’t hurt. The movie does have a few good bits. I like the scene where Bones & Spock face their greatest inward pain. Also, the scene with the “God” creature isn’t bad either. I do consider it a bit criminal that the first movie was revisited and this one was not. The first movie was a lot more of a pain to sit through (in Star Trek 1 the problem was that nothing was happening. In Star Trek 5, stuff is happening at least, stupid stuff, but stuff.).
One question I have about the ST movie dvds so far. Does ANYBODY like the scientific documentaries we’ve had on Time Travel, Terraforming, and other subjects? I’d much rather have a more ST related extra than these overbearing scientists talking shop. In their own special on tv I’d be fascinated, but here, they seem inappropriate.
I’ll probably pick up ST V in the future sometime. Can’t wait till Star Trek VI and Star Trek Generations. I hear there were many deleted scenes in Generations, I hope they make it to the dvd.
