The full release list is best viewed at DVDJournal.com. From that list, I rip out these titles for comment:
Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1987)
LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (the comic book) fans might find some fun in this.
American Splendor (2003)
Harvey Pekar comic book fans will find lots to like here. In all honesty, I never got into his comics, and autobiographical rantings don’t often impress me. It may be an amazing movie, but it’s not something I’m interested in. Different strokes, is all.
The Best of the Muppet Show: George Burns (1976)
I’m not kidding when I say that this episode of THE MUPPET SHOW is my all time favorite. From Veterinary Hospital to Gonzo singing off-time, it’s classic every step of the way. There are two other episodes on the disc, of course, but they’ll pale by comparison.
The Fighting Temptations (widescreen) (2003)
Halle Berry is the new Cuba Gooding Jr.
Gilligan’s Island: The Complete First Season (3-disc set) (1964)
Good Times: Season Two (1974)
What’s Happening: Season One (3-disc set)
Because you can just never have enough sit-coms on DVD.
King Solomon’s Mines (1985)
Or, you can read the original book for free.
Lost in Translation (widescreen) (2003)
I have nothing to say about this one. I want to see it. I’ll throw it on the Netflix list, where it’ll rot with a couple dozen other fine movies for a few months before I get to it.
Red Dwarf: Series 3 and 4 (1989)
Really, this is the only must-buy on my list, and I might even delay it by a few weeks, anyway. I have plenty of other stuff to watch right now.
Short Circuit (1986)
A cinematic masterpiece of my youth. “Johnny 5 is alive!”
Next week: Frank Sinatra, Henry Rollins, Marco Polo, and Xena. It’s a weird release list, and nothing appeals to me.
