C64: GEOS
I haven’t done any good Commodore 64 stories here in a while, so I’ll link to this one:
Slashdot | GEOS Available for Download After 18 Years
GEOS was like Windows 3.1 for the Commodore, only with slightly less functionality, a slightly quicker boot up time off your floppy disk, and less colors. I remember using this thing near the end of my C=64 days, just as an experiment. It struck me as slow and tedious. But it was supposed to be The Next Big Thing.
Using a joystick to move around the screen was odd. There were no mouses back then for Commodores. People used the keyboard only, which I think is still the best way to work on a computer from day to day. Give me more keyboard shortcuts, I always say. My wrists didn’t hurt as much back in the C=64 days when I wasn’t always switching between two input devices like you have to in the Mac/PC world.
I also remember getting a Koala Pad for the computer back then, too. That’s the predecessor to today’s Wacom tablets, only they were about an inch thicker and made of clunky plastic.
Ah, memories. Check out the comments thread on the Slashdot story for some good laughs.
