Yet more TV poker

FOXNews.com – Foxlife – Real Deal Turns Into Poker Drama

ESPN is folding its popular World Series of Poker into a dramatic series set to debut early next year. “Tilt” will be set in Las Vegas with an ensemble cast (two women, four men) and will delve into the personal lives of poker stars trying to find fame and glory in Sin City.

It was inevitable, I suppose.

There’s quickly approaching an overkill of poker on television. They’re starting to look and sound cheaper, too. Have you seen Fox Sports Net’s invitational poker tournament? It should be really cool to have one table with the likes of Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Howard Lederer, Doyle Brunson, etc. But the graphics suck, the commentators are mostly boring, and they tell us about the table talk instead of letting us listen in on it. Wrong way to do it, guys.

I’d be really scared of this except for one thing, ESPN did a great job with their series Playmakers. They didn’t pull many punches there and kept the entire thing very interesting. I picked up the first DVD on Netflix to see if it was worth the hype, and although I’m not much of a pro sports fan I was sucked into it by the end of the first episode. I’m willing to give this one a chance!
