Greetings from a PowerMac

Well, this is certainly a cool-looking computer. Don’t worry; I’ll have the prerequisite pics and screen grabs for you all eventually. I’m using Safari right now as my browser, but aim to eventually get Firefox up and running. Right now I’m just wandering the machine aimlessly, poking and prodding at buttons to see what will work and what will be fun.

My internet connection is running. My Wacom Tablet is running, tho I need to check settings on it somewhere. I’ve opened up the side panel of the tower already — that’s the easiest and most intuitive side panel I’ve ever seen in my life. Why won’t one of the PC manufacturers use something like it? My old computer had a side panel that hasn’t shut properly since I first opened it up two years ago. I have 2 Gig of memory to add to this machine next, and I think it’ll be a piece of cake. The cooling fans just slide right out. It’s very cool.

The only thing that’s bothering me so far is the keyboard. The keys are so big and don’t have the same depth to push down into. It’s weird, but I’ll get used to it. That’s part of the reason I’ve still typing now. I’m trying to acclimate myself to it.

It’s also going to take some time to learn how to tool around in here with the keyboard shortcuts. Obviously, for starters, hitting the “END” button doesn’t take you to the end of the text area. SHIFT-END seems to do the trick OK, though.

I think I need to use this lovely little Safari browser, though, to go look at some movie trailers. Excuse me now, but I’ll be back later with more thoughts and pics and whatnot.

  1. Here I sit with my G3 500MHz PowerBook. Yeah, I’m a bit jealous. Have fun with the new hardware, Augie. I’m looking forward to your reviews of it and OS X.

  2. Congrats on your new baby! Have you decided on a name yet? ;)

  3. I will agree with you 100% on the keyboard thing. Believe it or not, that helped me go with the PowerBook laptop, because it has a GREAT tactile “clicky” keyboard, as opposed to the soft, shallow keyboard that the desktops come with. I hate typing on EM’s computer, and avoid it whenever possible. :)
