Podcasting

MSNBC - Tivo for your iPod

Just when the mainstream media had finally managed to figure out what blogging was all about, Adam Curry had to go ahead and invent podcasting. A podcast is a radio show that listeners subscribe to online. Every time a new program is posted, it automatically feeds into the subscriber’s computer. From there, the listener zaps it onto a digital music player and hits the road: Think of it as TiVo for your MP3 player.

It’s do-it-yourself radio. It used to be, you’d have to have a website and post MP3 files to it for people to come to you and download it. With PodCasting, you do the same, but an aggregator helps automatically update your subscribers with the latest program when you upload it.

It’s not a hugely inventive concept, but it’s enough of one to get people moving. PodCasts are popping up like mad, like blogs once did (and still are). With some simple software — I hear Audacity is popular, and I use it elsewhere already — you can make your own radio broadcast for the ‘net. It’s tempting to me…

Anything’s gotta be better than listening to Adam Curry not getting his Skype to work for a half hour…
