Ashlee/SNL Part Deux

FOXNews.com – Foxlife – Ashlee Must Relive ‘SNL’ on Reality Show

Wednesday night’s season premiere of MTV’s “The Ashlee Simpson Show” — the first half of a two-part story arc — captured the entire fiasco as it unfolded last fall when Simpson walked off the stage during a live “SNL” telecast after a tape-recording of a song she had performed earlier on the show began to play.

Dont worry if you missed it; MTV will be repeating it ad infinitum for the next three years.

No offense here, but does anyone even watch MTV anymore? I’m more of a VH1 or Fuse! watcher myself and that’s pretty rare, even with the occasional HeadBangers’ Ball thrown in for good measure.

Is MTV even relevant anymore or am I just o-l-d?

When I was a kid, MTV was all about music, and I loved it. By the time I was in high school, every show was “We’re at the beach, having more fun than you!”. For all the good intent, I also think the music industry has been destroyed by them.

Rap music has sure been ruined by MTV. I think it was better for rap music when MTV didn’t air rap videos. Now, every rapper knows the way to success is to have a video full of nearly naked females and bling bling, because those are the rap videos that get the most air time on MTV. And getting air time on MTV leads to record sales.

So, instead of getting thought provoking (or even humorous) rap like we got in the 80′s and early 90′s from PE, NWA, Latifah, 2Pac, and Biz Markie, we get Nelly, P Diddy, Mase, Master P, and the Cash Money Crew.

It reminds me of the travesty going on in jazz. All the acclaim and/or money going to the likes of Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Kenny G, and Boney James, while true jazz talent like Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, and Earl Klugh barely get mentioned outside of real jazz magazines.
