Podcasting Star Wars
No, this isn’t about George Lucas’ universe. This is about the early days of podcasting, the innovators, and the inevitable clashes and personality conflicts. I listened to both Dave Winer and Adam Curry a lot when I first got into podcasting last November/December. I remember their joint podcasts when they met up in Florida. After that, though, it seemed like neither of them ever mentioned the other. I assumed they couldn’t come to any agreements and moved in their own direction, although I found it curious that two people who did so much stuff in the open never talked about it again.
A gentleman by the name of “TDavid,” who’s been around podcasting longer than I, wrote up his observations of the split in a piece titled “Podcasting Star Wars: Winer vs. Curry.” Eventually, it got Dave Winer to create a podcast to explain the whole thing. I have to listen to that next. Nevertheless, this makes for a great piece of history for the podcasting phenomenon.
As for me — Winer’s podcasts (as irregular as they were) quickly wore thin for me. Although his blog usually has some good links, I’m not on the same wavelength when it comes to politics and it seemed he got into petty fights an awful lot.
I don’t listen to Curry all that often anymore, either. I’m listening to other stuff on my iPod and in my free time. I keep up with Curry’s home page, though, to see what’s going on in the world of podcasting, but it’s not the Must Listen it once was for me.
I never took to the Dawn and Drew podcast. Not my thing.
My podcasts are a direct response, though, to his early requests for more shorter podcasts. Everyone else was doing 20 and 30 minute monologues. My podcasts are 5 to 10 minutes by design, although I’ve been known to go past that once or twice. Even after 6 months of doing this, I still have a lot to learn and a lot to add to those podcasts. I just have no time to do it.
I guess the final irony here is that the more podcasting I do, the less time and energy I have to listen to others’.

Yeah. D & D not my cup of tea, either.
PK & J I enjoy–fun and stupid. I like Inside the Magic–all about Disney. Barefoot Radio and Slacker Astronomy & Distorted View are on my keeper list.

I should probably just start a thread on here one of these days to run down everyone’s playlists. Might be interesting. . .
I need to try Slacker Astronomy, though. I think I heard one or two of their earliest podcasts, but have to get back for more.
