Thursday Night TV

Thursdays are still busy nights of TV, even if Must See TV migrated from NBC to CBS. Still, here’s my breakdown:

* CBS has SURVIVOR and the new season of CSI.
* NBC has the return of JOEY. I know it’s not fashionable to like it, but I enjoy 22 minutes of brainless laughs every now and then. That’s right — I think JOEY is funny.
* That’s followed by the season premiere of Donald Trump’s THE APPRENTICE, which is destined to get better ratings than the awful Martha Stewart version that premiered to an empty stadium last night.
* FOX has the second episode of REUNION, which I’m not watching.
* ABC continues to milk this whole Dancing thing with DANCING WITH THE STARS. At 8, I guess they’re repeating an edited version of Tuesday’s episode. At 9, you get the results show.
* BRAVO has the season finale of CELEBRITY Card Game That Cannot Be Mentioned SHOWDOWN.

My poor TiVos might overheat tonight.

I think JOEY is funny too. My hunch is that it’ll never be big because the audience it wants–FRIENDS fans–subconsiously resents the show for splitting up the Friends. Frasier worked because CHEERS fans didn’t mind that Frasier wasn’t hanging out at Cheers anymore. But FRIENDS fans WANT Joey to be hanging with Monica and Chandler all the time, they WANT to believe that the six friends are still hanging out, and the show very forcibly tells them that they aren’t. That’s why it’ll never be big, says pop psych me.

Too bad tonight’s episode will be stretched out to a full hour. :)

Not only that, but doesn’t Chris Rock’s highly acclaimed comedy start tonight at 8? And next week Smallville and Alias both premiere, also at 8. Brutal.

JOEY is no FRIENDS, but I agree that it was reliably funny last year. I’m looking forward to season 2 … though I’ll probably only catch it in repeats, since I’ll be front-lining EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS on the TiVo.

This is why I have to (illegally) download torrents. Is there a reason the few shows I actually want to watch are always up against each other?

There certainly seems to be a lot of that this year. Hopefully the networks will blink and move some of the head-to-head competition around so that, say, Veronica Mars doesn’t die horribly because all her viewers also watch Lost.
