Friday link dump

* On noisy leaf blowers. ‘Tis the season. . .

* Just what everyone needs: a remote controlled plane for your living room. And it’ll only set you back about $250!

* Top 50 Science Fiction Shows of All Time. I know these lists are made to be argued, but this thing is still a travesty. How did TWILIGHT ZONE not finish in the top three? How did STAR TREK: VOYAGER wind up at #11? The new BATTLESTAR: GALACTICA is #2 of all time? I think even that show’s fans will have to admit that it’s a little early for that. And while I appreciate the high ranking for BABYLON 5 (at #5, for cuteness’ sake, I bet), I think their description of it as “Some may compare it to ‘Star Trek DS-9′ but with a better plot and cast” is getting it exactly backwards.

* I mean, really, they have STARGATE SG-1 ranked as a better show than THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

* SLIDERS is in the top ten.

* UGH. What a joke.

* I don’t have any links for you today after that one. Is it obvious yet? More tomorrow.

I knew that list was doomed when I hit #27 and there was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now, I know you can argue that it isn’t sci-fi, its more fantasy, which is why I let it slide for a moment. Then I saw a piece of dreck show like The Hitchhiker made it to #20 or something. That’s when I knew it was a joke.

I agree with the rest of your points. I like the BG, but #2 is wildly optimistic. No DS9 (I never felt the urge to get into a debate over which is better, DS9 or B5. I loved both of them. I would own DS9 DVDs if Paramount didn’t insist on ridiculously over-pricing them), no Farscape (didn’t get into the show, but surely god it was better than a lot of the dreck there), etc.

I think it’s a list designed to annoy people and get them to go to that site and yell at him.

FARSCAPE wasn’t on that list? And SLIDERS was?

    Yeesh

And I didn’t watch the second half of BUFFY, but I’d still put it in the top 20, and I could name a half dozen shows to replace with it from that same range.

  3. Michael Heilemann Says:

Nonsense, Battlestar Galactica easily earns its place; if it were up to me it would take the number one spot :)

  4. Scott Beeler Says:

As you say, the lack of “Farscape” in the list *at all* is ridiculous (it’d probably be in the top 15 for me), and “Buffy” is way too low. New BSG, “ST:Voyager”, “Sliders” all much too high.

Also, “Futurama” at #41 is a travesty. Should be at least top 20, definitely. And “The Prisoner” should be on the list somewhere.

Also also, that mini-RC-plane is awesome.

  5. Chaz Ervin Says:

No THE PRISONER? They just lost all their cool points and/or geek credibility.

  6. Nathan Says:

I’d have put Angel and Hercules on that list for sure, could probably have found a spot for Smallville and Charmed. Even ones like Buck Rogers and Greatest American Hero are way too low.

  7. Eric Gimlin Says:

Any list missing both “Farscape” and “The Prisoner” is fatally flawed. I could make pretty good arguments for either of them taking the top spot; for crying out loud! This sort of list can be fun to argue about if it’s anywhere close to decently done; this one isn’t. (Oh, and as aside; thank you for the blog, Augie. It’s a daily stop for me, and has been for quite a while.)
