Tuesday Link Dump - Special Music Edition

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

* Nellie McKay’s second album has been pushed back to December 27th, from its original October 17th release date.

* ROCKSTAR INXS fans: iTunes now offers Jordis Unga’s rendition of “The Man Who Sold The World” and Marty Casey’s “Trees” as singles, in addition to INXS/J.D. Fortune’s “Pretty Vegas”.

* While I’m linking to iTunes, I hope you’ve had the chance to hear O.A.R.’s “Stories of a Stranger” by now. Great disc, and one I hope to eventually write up a review of here.

* And the “Fountains of Wayne Hotline” song I linked to here not long ago is now also a single on iTunes. Funny stuff, even for FoW fans like myself.

* Don’t miss the legendary Christopher Walken dance in the Fatboy Slim video for “Weapon of Choice,” either. It’s the most downloaded music video on iTunes as I write this up.

* Michael Butler’s Rock and Roll Geek Show is an old school podcasting favorite. He recently interviewed Idol’s Constantine Maroulis, who had some interesting things to say. For starters, the planned AI Christmas special ain’t happening.

The tone of the writeup of the podcast is a little defensive, I think. Constantine is right — AI is just a “silly TV show.” Some people get too wrapped up in such things. . .

Shopping cart flood smallWhat do you call this thing, so commonly found at supermarkets around the world?

I grew up calling it a “shopping cart.” Someone recently referred to it as a “wagon.” Now I hear “trolley” on this website. Is this another geographic difference? Or am I reading too much into it now?

* The LOST tribute video - set to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” And this is Weird Al Yankovic’s version. Who’da thunk the lyrics would fit the series so amazingly? Takes a while to load, but is worth it. It’s also spoiler-filled through to season two. If you haven’t seen the show, very little of it’ll make sense to you anyway. . .

* Van Halen is not doing ROCKSTAR next season. I guess we’re back to guessing Queen, then.

* I’m surprised: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE has been renewed for next summer. It was empty calories, but it was entertaining. There has to be a drinking game out there somewhere for hostess Lauren Sanchez, though. (Take 1 sip every time she says, “you guys.” Take one sip every time she points directly to the camera. One sip for each use of “make some noise” or “give it up.” One sip for every contestant she calls “hot.” etc.)

* The classics never die. Their websites just get updated and more confusing to find the classics on. (Heck, that’s not even the popular version of the thing, but it’ll do for today’s sake.)

* Giant bunny wabbit.

Meanwhile, at the World Series. . .

Roger Clemens hasn’t changed a bit, has he? Yankees fans saw the pattern when he pitched in New York, and now a whole new city and the rest of the nation can enjoy his greatest cop-out:

Whenever Clemens gets in trouble on the mound, he suddenly comes up with an injury to get out of the game.

Baseball’s greatest pitcher? Or greatest charlatan? You make the call, sports fans.

No bowling this afternoon

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

ACK! I’m sorry to say that I goofed. The scheduled PBA on ESPN this afternoon is a rerun of last year’s final event.

The new bowling begins on ESPN next Sunday at the usual 1:00 p.m. (East Coast) starting time.

My apologies to you and your TiVos.

* Cut an inch, save $22 million. That’s the plan for The New York Times.

* The very definition of the word irony. Dog bites man isn’t news. Dog bites man who passed law against owners of dogs who bite men is.

* Lexus is introducing a new hybrid car, with a V8 engine included. Personally, I think that might be more power than you really need in a car, but what do I know? I’m not a Lexus consumer. (Thanks, Dana, for the linkage.)

* Ford is reporting a large quarterly loss. If they just would have given me 3.9% on a hybrid SUV, I could have helped them boost sales. By one. I guess all those employee discounts come at a cost in the end.

Water, water everywhere

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the video from last weekend of The Today Show reporter sitting in a canoe in Wayne, NJ. She’s trying to visually explain the problem with flooding in certain sections of Northern New Jersey after a week of heavy rain. The illusion is ruined as she paddles across the screen while two men walk past in front of her through the same water. The rain waters only came up to their ankles or so. Oops.

Last Sunday, I was in Wayne, NJ, heading over to the movie theater by the Willowbrook Mall. I needed to take a detour to get there because there was a current running down Willowbrook Blvd. in front of the theater. Thankfully, I had my camera with me and was able to take some pictures of the road and the parking lot behind the theater. I thought they came out well. Nothing nearly on the scale of Katrina or anything, mind you, but of local interest.

* 123 words created on THE SIMPSONS.

* THE AMAZING RACE blog, written by previous contestants of the series.

* We wish The Shat well.

* Rick Springfield released an album of cover tunes this past summer. The reviews are most harsh. In related news, he’s scheduled to return to GENERAL HOSPITAL in December.

Friday Link Dump

* The rumor mill is flying that a second season of ROCKSTAR: INXS would be ROCKSTAR: VAN HALEN.

* A classic quote from Douglas Adams: “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”

* David Hahn makes a few excellent points about the complaints against expensive movie experiences.

* TV Update for the weekend: The PBA returns to ESPN this Sunday afternoon. It’s starting to feel like Fall again.

* Meanwhile, the PBA is staging a special event to air on Christmas Day called The Final Frame. It’s a little convoluted, but it promises an all star cast of bowlers fighting for exemption.

* Broadband via hot air balloons/airships.

* Coming up on Sunday: Photos of last week’s flooding here in Northern NJ.

* What went wrong with SEAQUEST, besides the general suckiness of the show from beginning to end? An interesting look at how a network television can be created based on the strength of one name — Steven Spielberg — and renewed based on false hope and demographics. For me, one of the more interesting things to jump out of the article is that Terry O’Quinn was once considered to lead the show on its ill-fated third season. Michael Ironside was hired, instead, as the producers wanted.

* The perfect pitcher? (Via)

* Play Dance Dance Revolution on your calculator. How much weight will you lose this way? Not much, I suppose.

* GIMPshop is The Gimp reorganized to look and act just like Photoshop.

* Top ten design mistakes of blogs. While I don’t think it’s necessary to include my picture on this site, I think an “About Augie” page would be a good one. Thankfully, it’s an easy thing to do with the functionality of the latest updates of WordPress. I’ll be getting to it soon.

* Yes, I just blogged about blogging.

* TIME Magazine picks the 100 greatest English language novels from 1923 to present. I’ve read five. Yet I feel no shame.

* Mac support for TiVoToGo may be coming as soon as Q1 of 2006.

* Meet DVD Jon.

* Your Flash game of the day only requires one button to play. (Via)

* I see casual mentions across the comics blogosphere to the coming end of the oil supply. People are hopping on the bandwagon to this theory the way they like to hop on pet causes — repeat a theory often enough and everyone assumes it’s fact and you’re stupid if you disagree. But it might not be the end of the world, after all. It might just be an oil bubble. Lots of great stuff in there, including Jimmy Carter’s proclamation that the world’s oil supply would dry up by 1990, and Canada’s abundant supply of oil that tops even the Middle East’s. I, for one, welcome our new Canadian Overlords.

New releases, 18 Oct 2005

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

These lists come from DVDJournal.com and TVShowsonDVD.com

We’ll start with the TV shows:

C.S.I.: NY: The Complete 1st Season

Watch it back in the days before it looked like everything else on television.

Garfield and Friends: Garfield Prime Time set

Collects a few of those prime time specials.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Season 1 Vol. 1

I never got into it, but judging by the turnout for He-Man stuff at the summer conventions, I’m betting a few of you did.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!: The Legend of Zelda: The Complete Series

Really — who wants to admit to buying this?

The Twilight Zone: Season 4: Definitive Edition

Love the idea. Glad they’re releasing all this classic television in decent boxed sets. I just don’t have the time or energy to watch it all.

World [Card Game With Two Hole Cards and Five Community Cards] Tour Season Three (8-disc set)

Love the series. Might rent one or two discs at some point just for the commentaries. Otherwise, I’ve seen them all before, and the Travel Channel repeats the sprockets off them.

Over to the movies, where it’s “Batmanapalooza” this week:

Batman: The 1943 Serial Collection (2-disc set)
The Batman vs. Dracula
Batman: Special Edition (2-disc set) (1989)
Batman Returns: Special Edition (2-disc set) (1992)
Batman Forever: Special Edition (2-disc set) (1995)
Batman & Robin: Special Edition (2-disc set) (1997)
Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997 (8-disc set)
Batman Begins: Deluxe Edition (widescreen) (2-disc set) (2005)
Batman Begins (widescreen) (2005)
Batman Begins (pan-and-scan) (2005)

See what I mean?

Care Bears: Big Wish Movie (2005)
My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas
Strawberry Shortcake Gift Set
Strawberry Shortcake: Dress Up Days

I fell all warm and fuzzy now. I also feel like a six year old girl, circa 1984. This is disturbing.

Elektra: Unrated (2-discs set) (2005)

Why? Dear God, Why?!?

Ferngully: The Last Rainforest (1992)

See above.

The Jazz Singer: 25th Anniversary Edition (1980)

Neil Diamond is hip again. He has a new album coming out with help from Dr. Dre. Life is weird, ain’t it?

Mad Hot Ballroom (2005)

Very cute movie about NYC school children competing in an after school ballroom dance competition.

The Mask of Zorro: Deluxe Edition (1998)

As popular as it was, it’s still one of the overlooked gems of the 1990s. Great fun, great action. It also has one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time.

This list came directly from my show notes for this week’s DVD podcast. I’ll have that up tonight or tomorrow, but it might sound very familiar, after you’ve read this. Sorry about that.

* INXS has success with “Pretty Vegas.” It is a great song, though I liked the playful good natured “Trees” even more.

* The Jedi had it coming.

* Math of THE SIMPSONS.

* Speaking of math: NUMB3RS is doing well in the ratings. It’s winning its Friday night time slot with a consistent 13 share and roughly 7 million viewers. Not bad at all.

* The CURIOUS GEORGE movie trailer shows us an animated film done with traditional two dimensional pen and ink. As much as I love many of the CGI films, this trailer shows what can be done with a little imagination and a lot of pencil work.

* Everyone else is linking to it, but I don’t have the time to read it at the moment. Maybe later: Life Hackers

LOST on iTunes

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Oops, I was wrong. I didn’t have the most up to date version of QuickTime installed on my computer. Once I did that, though, the episode of LOST I downloaded from the iTunes store played just fine on my computer.

Some of the niggling details get lost with the small picture, but it’s overall very sharp and clear. The motion on the video is smooth. The sound is great. The image suffers a little from wide shots and establishing shots and shadowy pics, but it’s a very serviceable video if you’re a die hard who missed an episode.

I suspect most of the first week sales of LOST, though, were by people like me who just wanted to test the technology, even if it costs two bucks to do so.
