CD Releases, 15 November 2005

Noticed some interesting releases over at MoviePoopShoot.com’s New Music listing:

  • Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies! (includes covers of TV themes and original songs that appeared on various soundtracks; w/cover of Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time”) (Jive)

I think rock covers of “Baby One More Time” are now officially cliche. It was fun while it lasted, though.

  • Jimmy Buffett Live at Fenway Park (two CDs w/bonus DVD; from 2004 concerts; ICE #224) (Mailboat)

I’m not a Parrot Head or anything, but that sounds cool for his fans.

  • Elton John Peachtree Road (Collectors’ Edition) (CD/DVD combo; ICE #224) (Universal)

As if there aren’t enough Elton John DVDs out there, we’re getting another one. The DVD has nine songs from the album performed live in Georgia.

  • Rod Stewart The Great American Songbook (box set; includes all four volumes of series) (J Records)

If you were “waiting for the trade,” comics fans, here’s your shot.

  • OST Aeon Flux (live-action adaptation of animated series w/Charlize Theron) (Lakeshore)

The animated series is out on DVD next week. The soundtrack for the new movie is out this week. It’s all tied-in, folks.

  • OST I Walk the Line (Johnny Cash biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon; ICE #224) (Wind-Up)

It ticks me off now that my occasional reference to the one or two Johnny Cash songs I know will now be considered trendy. A year ago, nobody got the “burning ring of fire” or “I’ve seen the train a’coming, a’coming around the bend” references. Now, they’re all lifelong Cash fans. UGH

If it makes you feel better, I never much listened to Cash, but I’m buying the movie OST, as I dig Phoenix’s singing.

What about Carrie Underwood’s new CD? I actually like it a lot. Well worth the iTunes download.

  2. John C. Says:

Someone who only knows one or two Johnny Cash songs is annoyed at people who will get into Cash because of the movie? I don’t get it.

It’s not terribly difficult: You know one or two references to Figure A. Your friends think you’re weird, or have no idea what you’re talking about. Flash forward a year later, when there’s a movie about Figure A, and all of a sudden Figure A is popular and a cult classic times ten. You make one of those references again, and your friends roll their eyes because now you’re just a bandwagon jumper. Oddly enough, it’s your friends who are the real bandwagon jumpers and –

    Ah, nevermind.

It’s like the people who discovered Queen when WAYNE’S WORLD came out and suddenly thought they were the greatest band of all time, but didn’t know who Freddie Mercury was six months ago.

It’s like all those people who became overnight hockey fans in NJ the minute the Devils started to actually win games.

    I hate bandwagon jumpers, basically.

I think what it comes down to is that your friends have no culture, Augie. If they don’t know Johnny Cash, they should at least know the Social Distortion cover of “Ring of Fire.”

  5. Augie De Blieck Jr. Says:

Who’s Social Distortion? Eh, screw it, I don’t need to know.

  6. EzekielRawlins Says:

Mike Ness will get you for that comment, Augie.

Thank goodness for Google, or I’d be totally lost in this conversation. ;-)
