Superman Returns: The teaser trailer
Perhaps even more interesting than the mere existance of the new teaser trailer for SUPERMAN RETURNS is the variety of formats it’s offered in. Apple’s handy QuickTime movie trailer site recently started carrying HDTV versions of most of the big release trailers as a matter of course, but the revolution continues to expand.
The SUPERMAN RETURNS teaser is available in Real, Windows Media, and QuickTime (regular size, and full screen) formats. But it also includes options for PSP and iPod formatting.
Technology is a wonderful thing, but sometimes confusing. The new wave of video formats is both high-bandwidth high-def video AND itty bitty miniature video for portable players.

This movie is just going to be amazing. I visited the set in July and this film is just…it brings a tear to my eye. The trailer, while merely a teaser, is just so damn uplifting.

Interesting trailer, not exactly sold on the “new guy.”

I have really big expectations for this one. DC just seems to get it when it comes to movies.
X-Men 1 and Spider-Man 1 were good, but not great, and both had sequences of scenes that were interminably slow and mind-numblingly boring. I was seemingly the only person in North America that thought the Hulk was a very good movie. The Punisher was good, but more of a good B-movie than a good A-movie. Daredevil was disappointing. I haven’t brought myself to watch that train wreck called Elektra.
Batman Begins, DC’s return to movie making, was better than all of those movies. Even though X-Men 2 and Spider-Man 2 were much better than the first iterations of their respective franchises, Batman Begins, despite being possibly hindered by having to lay down the foundation of a franchise, was better than X-Men 2 and as good as S-M 2. It just clicked.
The first two Superman movies are the two best comic book movies ever made, in my opinion. The Flash was the best live-action super hero television series. Timm’s Batman was the best comic book animated series. The Teen Titans and Justice League are both very sharp and tell great stories. They just click.
I have great faith in the new Superman movie. It is going to rock balls!

I think Superman Returns has a tough row to hoe. Some of the plot elements sound very strange, and while they could turn out fine (the Bat-tank was fine, for instance, as was Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), more times than not, a strange take on an iconic character turns out poorly.
That said, my very first comic book was an issue of Action Comics, so you know I want the best for the Man of Steel.

Hey! At least I didn’t say Superman 3 or Supergirl were among the best.

I’m telling ya, this movie is going to surprise people. The elements are all there and when you meet Routh, you know he IS Superman.
And if you disagree, you’re letting the terrorists win and rewriting history.

It’s striking how accidentaly messianic that trailer is. If that was intentional, I’d have amazingly high hopes for this movie, but I don’t think Warner Brothers is willing to try a mass market movie that explicitly compares Superman and Jesus, as interesting as that might be.
