Tuesday Link Dump
* Map time: Who says “pop” and who says “soda?” Not surprisingly, the Atlanta area is heavily in favor of “Coke” as the generic for the bubble drink.
Guitar Hero arriving on the XBox 360? (Thanks, Dana!)
Jets season tickets for a dollar. Or, it might just all be a goof. Either way, it’s funny.
MTV turns 25 today. Here’s a brief look back at some of its “highlights.”

Ahh, MTV, all growed up…too bad I don’t watch you anymore. Remember when you were about making a difference in the world, how did you become reduced to “Yo Momma” and “Laguna Beach?”
Man, I miss Martha Quinn and Kennedy.

Ezekiel — You may be the first person I’ve ever read openly bemoan the dirth of Kennedy in his life. She was doing a game show on GSN a few years back, but that’s dried up and blown out of town. Martha is likely still doing facial rejuvenation cream commercials on late night local cable TV infomercials. Such is life, post-MTV.
And that long-haired Adam Curry guy has been reduced to recording stuff for the internet. Loser!
(That last part was a joke, people.)

What can I say? There’s just something about Kennedy, perhaps it was her glasses (later referred to as the ‘Lisa Loeb Syndrome’), perhaps it was her outspoken nature, but it was probably her well-hidden elephant tattoo which fueled my early conservative viewpoint… All kidding aside, I’ve seen her game show and it broke my heart.
The only problem I had with Curry was when he got “picked” to host Head Banger’s Ball. Riki Rachtman was the better choice.
But, I still stand by my statement that MTV used to be about something. I really feel that the kids today are missing out.
Man, I feel old.

I use the term “Coke” to indicate a lovely, refreshing, sweet, carbonated beverage. Of course, the fact that I’m from the ATL and my Dad worked for Coca-Cola for 20 years has nothing to do with word choice! ;^)

I’m in the “other” category: I say “soft drink.”
1. August 2006 at 20:22
Coke is the real thing for us Louisiana folks; it’s become a pretty generic term for any soft drink (except for the hallowed Dr. Pepper, revered from New Orleans to Shreveport and called by its proper name).
As for the XBox Guitar Hero, that’s cool and all, but I’m more excited about the Guitar Hero II; the list of songs to be used in the new game have me limbering up my fingers already. The Blabbermouth Web site has a listing of the songs featured on the new game: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=55818

Every console I buy, I say “never again.” Looks like Nintendo is going to hook me again.
As for MTV, meh, 25 years old and still stuck in adolescence. I was very amused when I saw the first episode of Megas XLR (on Cartoon Network’s online programming block: Toonami Jetstream) and a newly launched satellite broadcasting PopTV (with a logo image rather obviously aping MTV’s logo) was destroyed quite thoroughly by a wayward missile (and the satellite’s subsequent crash into a very large robot).
Gotta love Megas. Too bad my first experience with the show happened after it was already cancelled.

I guess I am one of those grumps that doesn’t like what MTV has become. I know that there isn’t a lot of money to be made in playing music videos 24/7, but I still think a channel called Music Television should show music related programming. I don’t mind if they want to have a reality show about putting a group together or the filming of a music video, but a reality show having nothing to do with music, just doesn’t do it for me.
On the brighter side, the Wii just can’t get here fast enough. Just can’t wait to get my hands on my Wii…err…that just didn’t come out right…

I’m from the west of scotland, I say “ginger” beat that!!!
But given we are the only market in the world where coke exists and it is not number 1 (that goes to a local drink Barr’s Irn Bru) maybe we just different.

My wife is from Western PA — Punxsutawney to be exact. They all say “Pop” over there. They also put french fries on otherwise healthy salads and worship a groundhog. But who am I to judge?
Hey Augie — if you ever get the chance, there’s a new geek podcast that a comics writer buddy of mine started. Perhaps you could help steer ‘im in the right direction? ;)
