Rock Star: Supernova Week 6 Results

Supernova bandThe show began, roughly, with Gilby doing his Oprah impression: “You get a guitar! You get a guitar! Everyone gets a guitar!” Gibson, you see, sent over guitars for each of the final 10 rockers.

Back at the Mayan, we were treated to such moments of wittiness as Ryan taking pleasure in making Tommy Lee uncomfortable, and Storm saying something along the lines of, “I wouldn’t hump you on stage; I’d break your back.” That caused a brief flash of ugliness on Jill’s face, for whom that comment was clearly pointed. I loved it. I’m funny that way.

After that begins my streak of amazing prognostication. I said that Magni would get the encore. If not him, then Lukas would get it. Guess what? They did two encores this week, which can only mean that the producers really want to save their footage of what’s happening at the mansion for the website.

Lukas went first, looking very creepy in his black fishnet gloves. He is a sexually ambiguous little man, isn’t he?

Magni did his encore with the full band this time. While I preferred the acoustic version, the full-out electric version sounded good.

The rockers who fell to the bottom three over the course of the night were Jill, Josh, Zayra, Ryan, and Patrice. Knowing who the TV audience at home likes to look at and talk about the most, Brooke made sure to tell Zayra, personally, that she was safe. I didn’t think it was possible, but Zayra picked an even tighter pair of pants to wear last night. Yet, they sagged on her. It looked like she had a little itty bitty micro-skirt on, but it was just the way the spandex fell on her body. Bizarre. She was shocked. I was upset that we didn’t get another awful performance out of her last night, but very happy that she’d be back for more pain next week. I hope she plays her new Gibson. Bwah ha ha ha

Jill was the first pulled into the Danger Zone. She screamed “Respect,” but the band loved it. I thought she was oversinging it. I also thought she acted weird during the harmonica solo. She was trying to steal the spotlight during the soloist’s moment. Not cool.

Josh was pulled out next, and sang Bad Company’s “Shooting Star.” After Tommy Lee’s warning about the guitar the previous night, Josh chose to play the guitar and bob his head again. Weird. Does he not remember the Duran Duran moment of earlier this season? The singing was OK, though, but obviously not right for the band.

Patrice turned out to be safe. I was shocked. She doesn’t seem to have too much phone support from the viewers. This week, it was enough.

Ryan was yanked out, instead. I guess I wasn’t alone in not exactly thinking he was great last night. He sang Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” and did a really good job of it. He fell into a couple of his bad habits with standing on stage and looking limp, but he’s getting there. The performance was enough to make him safe.

And, sure enough, the band let him sit down first.

Then, Tommy Lee incorrectly said they were going to do a first for the show — a double elimination, as predicted here yesterday. He either thinks of Season Two of ROCK STAR as a completely different show, or he didn’t watch the first season, where INXS did it earlier in the season. And so he kicked off both Josh and Jill. (”Went up a hill, to fetch a pail of water…”)

The End. Discuss below.

Jill actually sang Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” didn’t she?

  2. Augie De Blieck Jr. Says:

Yeah, that’s me typing too fast for my brain. I’ll go correct that now. (What the hell song is “Temptation,” anyway? There’s a Billy Joel song with that title, but that’s all I can think of.)

  3. derhaken Says:

Glad to see them go… There should be one more double elimination… Hopefully next week, but they’ll probably skip one week. That way we can get quickly down to the three actually can win the competition: Dilana, Magni, and Lukas. (Not saying that these are the best singers, but the only ones who can win.)

As the series ends on 9/13, here are my predictions (for what it is worth). This is based on who I think will be voted off each week (once again not talent).
    8/16 – Patrice (Please….)
8/23 – Ryan, Toby (Still no Zayra)
8/30 – Storm (What no Zayra???)
9/6 – Zayra gets the boot (Final Three: Dilana, Magni, Lukas)
9/13 – Lukas goes first…. The band realizes that no matter what they say, a woman will NOT win the competition (although she should).. Then Dilana, Leaving Magni as the lead singer….

Curious to hear what everyone else thinks.

  4. Wes C. Addle Says:

To argue a point you brought up in your recap of Tuesday’s show, Augie, Zayra CAN sign.

    Here’s evidence:

I had to do a double take and make sure this was her. Now granted, she’s definitely not a rock singer, but the girl can sing. Just not apparently in English.

  5. Augie De Blieck Jr. Says:

Wes: OK, so there is SOME hope for Zayra after all. She’s just not meant to be the glam rocker she wants to be for this show.

Derhaken: Not a bad theory, but I think Storm will make it to the final four. Zayra won’t. I think her novelty act is starting to wear down

  6. derhaken Says:

    Aug:

I agree the Zayra act is getting old. I would be quite happy if she was off the show already… My thought was that, neither Storm nor Zayra could possibly win. Therefore, if given the option of keeping one or the other for pure entertainment/ratings value they would keep Zayra.

That said, your result is equally possible, especially if Storm brings out those crazy eyes again…

  7. Beau Says:

At least two band members have a significant problem with how Lukas sings. He’ll be gone after Zayra.

    Final three: Dilana, Storm, Magni

If the band doesn’t want a female lead singer (which, frankly, is the novelty they need in order not to become Velvet Revolver II), it’s Magni.

If they are open to a female lead singer, it depends on whether or not they care if she can write a song. If they do, it’s Storm.

If they are open to a female lead singer and feel they have enough songwriters as-is, it’s Dilana.

  8. Jacob Says:

Ryan doing enjoy the silence wasnt that bad but I really didnt like the fact that he said “I changed the arrangment to make it more modern”. But the thing is he completely stole the arrangment from Lacuna Coil who has it out as a single and a video now. Reminded me of Chris Doughtry ripping off the arrangment of Lives cover of Walk the Line.

  9. Deborah Fedorchuk Says:

I really feel Dilona has the talent and the pipes to back it up. Ryan and Toby are not rocker material. They would be ok in a boy band but not fronting some of the best rock musicians in the world. Dilona should do a Darby Mills tune (Head Pins) as Darby Mills has a wicked voice. Dilona could also do a Carol Pope tune.I would like to here her sing High School Confidential. Magni has a fabulous voice especially when he did Starman. He just needs to get a little more ronchy on stage. Iv’e yet to see him let loose. Lucus could pull it off,he appears nervous on stage. I dont know if he has the confidence dilona or magni have. Storm just sucks, and what is with the gooffy comments she makes to Tommy Lee “whats up bitch”.
