Rock Star: Supernova Results
Aug 17
I didn’t take notes, so I’ll let you all fill in the blanks this week.
But the good news is that Zayra is finally gone. The funny thing is, I kinda liked that song she sang last night, but it showed her major weakness off more than ever: She can’t sing in English. Her accent is way too thick. Singing in Spanish is easy — singing in English is atrocious. She’ll be a solid balladeer in Mexico, but she’s not going to make it to the pop or rock charts in this country.
Patrice dodged a bullet in the band’s hopes that she might break through next week. She’ll need the performance of a lifetime. She did “Celebrity Skin” last night.
And Magni rounded out the bottom three, singing “Creep.”
Yes, Patrice and Magni sang songs that Lukas previously did on the show. Patrice one-upped Lukas by remembering all the lyrics, though. You know that had to piss him off. Really, the guy is ticked off every time the camera points at him. He’s either scowling or rolling his eyes. He’s always thinking, “I’m better than these people.”
Supernova finally had their first performance last night, an event so major that they had to process the video of the performance to look like film. Oh, and they went full-on MTV and made sure to make enough cuts between camera angles that I was getting dizzy by the end. I know now that I won’t be buying their album, but the song sounded fine, for what it is. Dilana did a great job fronting the band for the number. She just looked comfortable. I don’t see right now how she won’t win this thing. She deserves to.

Actually, Toby was not in the bottom 3. It was Magni…

Sorry – It had to be mentined somewhere…
A quick note on the golden child of the competition, Dilana.
Early on, she stood out of the competition and has been outfront since. But, she is not without flaw… For example: The Cats and the Cradle, from tuesday’s show, was the most unemotional performance of the song I’d ever heard. One of the most emotional songs sung with the passion of Satisfaction. Noted, it was on key, but it felt as if the vampira act is starting to get old and her performances are being phoned in.
Clearly, she is still among the top 2 contenders for the group but, it concerns me that she is starting to believe the hype and she is being viewed without fault by the band. Her performance was average on the Supernova song, for her (which is a million times better than anything Patrice could pull off), almost ignoring the band until the end.
If anyone doubts that she’s reading her own press, watch the most recent “webisode”….

I thought it was funny that when Magni was signing the line “I don’t belong here . . . ” he walked over and looked directly at Zayra and Patrice.

I was really expecting more from Supernova’s performance, I feel a bit let down.

I wonder about Dilana’s voice. They keep mentioning that Lukas’s voice is to closed off and gruff, but I never hear Dilana open up her vocals. I love Storm’s voice. And Magni, well, my eyes and ears drink him in whenever he performs:)

Troy – I particularly liked that part for the mic feedback that resulted! BWAH HA HA
Derhaken – Yeah, I really need to find time to watch those webisodes. I wish VH1 were airing those this year. UGH

I think EzekielRawlins brings up a point that has been the “pink elephant” in the room, which no one has talked about.
In comparing this to last season:
1.) Last year, INXS had a huge back catalogue of music – while Supernova is obviously new.
2.) INXS had a lot riding on the selection of a singer, while Supernova band members have other projects they are involved in and if this doesn’t take off they move on to something else (seperately).
3.) Supernova is not a true supergroup, where all the members had a history songwriting or being front men of their past respective bands(Tommy Lee excluded). Jason was great with Metallica but, was the bottom man on their depth chart, coming in late after Cliff’s unfortunate departure. Who knew who Gilby was before this show, aside from the most avid GnR fan, to me, at least Axl and Slash were GnR. Tommy is the only true superstar here.
4.) Before last night, no one had heard a Supernova song.
Quick Note: I own every Metallica, GnR (ex Spagetti incident), and several Crue albums and have been a fan of the bands for as long as I remember.
The season is great so far, but the success of the band afterward is the big question. And one more thing, Who is writing for Supernova? I didn’t know that Gilby, Jason or Tommy were lyricists….

How much long will ‘Supernova’ be able to keep their name? Isn’t there some kind of litigation going on?
Another thing, it may have already been said earlier, but how long with this band last? Seems more like a vanity project to me. These guys (except for Gilby) are reminding me more and more of Travis Barker with all the side projects going on.
Honestly, I’d rather play with the House Band.

Didn’t we already hear creep and that hole song once this season? i think they’re repeating songs

Spanish-language radio is growing like crazy all over the US. She can quite successfully break through on Spanish-language radio without ever leaving Puerto Rico (although for some reason, the on-screen graphics keep saying she’s a Texan).
And Porky, the songs were chosen by people about to be eliminated and they have free reign to sing any song the show has the rights to play.
Anyone thinking Dilana is untouchable needs to watch the “Webisode” of her during the song-writing clinic. Supernova looked about ready to pull a fire alarm and run out of the room during that debacle. Not that their original song had great lyrics last night, but it was a heartbreaking work of staggering genius compared to Dilana’s work. Supernova has no one with a strong track record of writing hit songs. They need to be factoring in song-writing ability.

Dilana looks like an aging truck stop waitress. And she needs botox. I have never before looked at someone and actually though, “She needs botox” because I think shooting botox is stupid, but… she really does. Botox and a chemical peel… how old *is* she anyway?
I liked Zayra. She was interesting. Patrice is the same thing every week… and she looks *too* wholesome. It’s kind of cool watching this show, because I don’t really like anyone. I want Storm to sing Orange Crush.

Does anyone else find that this season of Rock Star pales in comparison to the first? I don’t know if it’s because INXS was a real band and Supernova seems like kind of a joke, or because the contestants this time, for the most part, are obnoxious and less talented than those competing last season?
Aug 18, 2006 @ 03:22:36
I think the critics way-yyy under estimate Patrice’s talent! She has the “best power house vocals” so sorry…boring? Get over it !!! Quick to use someone else’s words and I laugh at that person! She is an all around talent ! Obviously, you have not seen her live shows, performing “her own Music!” She’s still sticking it out and when she leaves that joint , if she leaves? she will look back and say she’s had the time of her Life ! What an awesome experience, she is just that way ! Calm , cool and collective… a true professional.
WE LOVE YOU PATRICE !!!!

I think this season is kinda better in the last sense that this one has more train wrecks and i’m watching in that loveit/hate it kinda way as opposed to last time where i gave a shit about who would be winning…
this and who wants to be a superhero are the only reality shows i’ll watch..
stan the man actually made an interesting show out of a potentially horrific concept.

Please don’t drop peyote and post.
I think, just like last season, half the people are solid and half the people have no chance. I think INXS having a back catalog and a preexisting group gave last season more cohesion, but the finalists this season will be just as good as the ones last season.

I’m just shocked we had a pro Patrice post… She’s got the tattoos, the Katie Couric look/smile that doesn’t stop (I mean stop smiling already), and the overall feel of Martha Quinn, and the stage presence only found at your local coffee shop (Unless you’re in Amsterdam (they are pretty passionate there)). Add it up and it must be a lock for a Patrice victory… Don’t worry TexasRocks, AI starts soon….
