If they've been in the field long enough to feel comfortable with entering a contest then they certainly should have developed a tough enough skin to handle rejection. Any designer who can't take the criticism or rejection of having their ideas shot down needs to find another field. I've had more concepts that I thought were the best award-winning designs shot down than I've ever had accepted. You just gotta roll with the punches and keep that idea in the back of your head and hope you can use it later. I wouldn’t be concerned with hurting a designer.
