American Idol Surprise
New York Daily News - TV and Radio - ‘Idol’ plans a midseason bang
“American Idol” executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz promises a big event midway through the coming season of the red-hot talent show - but she won’t say what it is.
“If there’s one thing that makes ‘American Idol’ so big, it’s a huge event,” she told the Daily News.
“Something we’re working on is a big-event show, sometime in the middle of the season, something that will blow America away,” she added.
I’m naturally cynical about these kinds of events, but still curious. It can’t possibly live up to even this little bit of hype, but it’s something to look forward to.

I read a rumor about what the twist is, and it’s pretty neat. I don’t know if you care about spoilers for something like this or not, so I won’t post it here. If you want to know, let me know.

A big event that will blow America away. Have they hired some comics industry people or something?

Here’s what Canadian Idol is doing: http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/2006/12/19/2894168-cp.html
Perhaps AI does something similar?

Instruments and returning contestants aside (the latter of which would seem wholly unfair), I’d love to see them make the Idols write and perform their own songs. That’d be enough for me to tune in.

Sorry about dragging my feet … With no deadlines for a week, I’ve been away from my computer.
The word is that once the 12 finalists are announced, they’ll be broken into four groups, and made to sing as trios. Each week, one of the vocal groups will be marked for elimination by the viewers, and the judges will decides which member goes home.
Could be cool, I think.

That does sound interesting, Noel. But it doesn’t fit the quote in the story: “Something we’re working on is a big-event show…” The story makes it sound like the big event is going to happen during one episode only.
