New DVD Releases for 09 Jan 2007
Move fanatics and aficionados may wish to view the complete list of the week’s releases, but I will narrow it down for the rest of us.
- Crank (widescreen) (2006)
I had to look this one up to remind myself of what it was. This is the Jason Statham action thriller type thing. It looks like good cheesy popcorn movie fun, actually. Might be worth a rental.
- Extras: Season One (2-disc set)
- MI-5: Season Four (5-disc set)
It’s a very good week for British TV. I’ve not seen EXTRAS yet, but I love MI-5. Here’s my original MI-5 review.
- The Illusionist (2006)
There were a couple of magician movies last fall. This is the one with Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti.
Personally, I want to see “The Prestige” with Ricky Jay in it more.
- A Pup Named Scooby Doo: Vol. 5
- Spongebob Squarepants: Season Four Vol. 2
See? This is a family friendly blog.
Next week has the second season of DR. WHO on DVD, and precious little else, unless you want to admit to being such a big fan of KING OF QUEENS that you need to own the episodes on disc, too. I didn’t think so.
And later today — MacWorld coverage. What surprises does the Stevenote hold for all of us? Or, more accurately, which rumors will he confirm?

Personally, I am looking forward to finally being able to check out ‘Idiocracy’ today. It’s Mike Judge’s new movie and was only released in very limited markets.

I have heard good things about “The Illusionist”, but “The Prestige” was really great, I thought. I had mixed feelings going in, because it was based on a book I really liked (by Christopher Priest — no, the other one), but they did a really good job adapting it, and the cast is just great.

Of the two magician movies, I was really looking forward to “Prestige” more, but wound up liking “Illusionist” more. Maybe my expectations were too high for one and too low for the other, but of the two, I’d give “Illusionist” a second watch.

THE PRESTIGE is bigger, flashier, more lavish, but THE ILLUSIONIST is the better movie.
