Word Counting
Does anyone know of a word count extension plug-in add-on for Firefox 2.0 and better? I’d like to be able to highlight text on a web page and click on a button or right-click to get a word count pop up.
I found one that has been broken since Firefox 1.5 or so(*), and another that will only count words in TEXTAREAs, both of which are useless to me. On the Mac, I see potential for ThisService that I wouldn’t mind doing a little Perl Coding for. I just have to believe that someone’s already invented this particular wheel.
I would prefer a simple cross-platform web-based counter for this. If it ignores anything in a BLOCKQUOTE tag, all the better.

(*) Nevermind. It’s working for me now (in Windows 2000), and is basically exactly what I was looking for. But if you know of anything else, I’ll take further suggestions. Thanks!

Augie, that extension you pointed to as broken works for me in version 2 (XP version)
Before I installed it I downloaded the xpi, opened it in winrar, then edited the install.rdf file.
This has a max version at 9999 or something.
I changed it to 2.5, then resaved it in the archive, and ran the xpi to install the extension.
Now I when I highlight a passagw, and right click I get a word count option, which seems to work.

FYI my last response shows as 81 words.

OK, this is bizarre, but it’s working for me now, too, before I re-downloaded or re-installed it.
Hunh. It didn’t work on Friday when I attempted it, but it works now. Well, then, problem solved. Thanks, Mark!
