Oscars 2007

For the first time in many many years, I completely boycotted the Oscars last night.

Well, that’s not entirely true. I just didn’t care. I had better things to do with four hours of my time. I had just spent all weekend at the New York City Comic-Con, and I needed to catch up on other things. And since I had seen so few of the movies up for nomination and since the winners were all but a foregone conclusion, I sat this one out.

As it turns out, they weren’t all locks.

Most were, but –

HAPPY FEET over CARS? Is this Pixar backlash, or the Academy choosing to go along with the Al Gore theme of the night they knew they wanted? I mean, really, they even gave it Best Song for the year, though I supposed you could argue for vote-splitting in the DREAMGIRLS camp. . .

I was also happy to see that PAN’S LABYRINTH won some art/technical awards. It’s always good to see Films By Geeks do well.

But, there, I just saved myself nearly four hours of television viewing with two minutes at Oscar.com. I feel better about my life today.

What, no comments about Jennifer Hudson’s Oscar win?

The closest thing to a shocker was Alan Arkin over Eddie Murphy for best supporting actor. But people were saying Murphy was no longer a sure bet thanks to his godawful NORBIT. The best-picture category was a three-way race that included THE DEPARTED, so that was no biggie. You didn’t miss much.

Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker pretty much went as schedule and were well deserved. It’s a little disappointing that Scorsese won for a film that wasn’t a patch on some of his earlier work.

Ditto about Pan’s Labyrinth, Augie. I was a little disappointed it didn’t win the Best Foreign Film category, but then I haven’t seen any of the others, so I can’t really judge. I was also a bit sad that The Little Matchgirl did not win the Best Animated Short category.

Happy Feet, meh. I think Pixar had the better film, but it wasn’t exactly the top of their game.

I’ve still never watched the Oscars.

Vote splitting seems less likely when you consider that the last two times three songs from one film were nominated (Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid) they won.

I’m starting to see an inverse relationship between whether a movie wins an Oscar and whether I’ll find it entertaining. After the English Patient, Million Dollar Baby, and Crash, I’m going to need outside verification that a movie’s worth my time and not a bunch of depressing hooey.

    Good Lord, Augie!!!

You mean…. you mean you missed the amazing appearance of Penelope Cruz and the *** VOLVERINE ***?!?!

Best moment of the night for me, easily.

Yeah, I am kind of getting fizzled out by the Oscars. I only caught a few minutes of last years show and didn’t even turn to it at all this year. This years just seemed a little predictable to me as almost all the awards went to who I thought would win. Then of course, not many of the films were ones I was interested in either.
