Grease: It’s Over
Well, the series is over and the world responded with — a yawn.
Predictably, Max and Laura won. The girls were a toss-up. Max won the popularity contest, though I think Austin would have been better. But, hey, America gets what America wants.
We’ll see how things turn out this summer.
In the meantime, I doubt we’ll see a sequel to this, but it could be fun to speculate. What reality series casting call would you want to see next? PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: YOU’RE THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT? LES MISERABLES: DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING? JESUS CHRIST, ARE YOU A SUPERSTAR?
Nah, I don’t really see that last one getting too far. . .

I wish the production staff and everyone involved good luck with this revival. But looking at the ratings, it looks troubling. On the other hand, I just wonder how many people will see it with or without the reality show.

Man, Augie, you had me laughing out loud at “JESUS CHRIST, ARE YOU A SUPERSTAR?”. Someone whip up a promo graphic for that quick!

Spamalot would be a perfect fit….

Dan – I think you hit the nail on the head. The musical doesn’t need the reality show nearly as much as the reality show needed the musical. GREASE will do boffo box office when it opens, and then thrive on its talent and direction. It hasn’t been around in a few years, and there’s always another generation looking for “their” version of the musical. It’s a complete evergreen.
I don’t think the TV show’s low ratings will be a bother on the Broadway production at all.
Phil – Thanks, that was my favorite line on this blog in a LONG time. When it came out, I giggled, too. =)
Derhaken – I could see that, actually. It would make for a much funnier reality show, too!

I for one would love to get up to NYC and see this one. I have been a long time musical fan and have yet to get up to Broadway for anything. I am glad that both Max and Laura won. I just wasn’t feeling Austin as much, despite him having more professional experience. He just seemed very set in his ways and I just couldn’t see him as a Danny. that said, I think Laura and Max have great chemistry together and I wish them all the best in the upcoming run.
Did you notice David Ian’s face when Max was announced? It was kind of a “Holy crap what the heck did America just do?” look. Priceless!
