See, but then I read: For the season as a whole, "American Idol" ratings will be slightly down or even identical to last year, when DVR viewing is taken into account. To some degree interest is driving by the personalities involved, and a whole new cast of characters join next spring, said Fox's Scott Grogin.
This year's finale compares to the 30.3 million who watched in 2005, and 28.8 million in 2004. The showdown between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard in 2003 attracted 38 million viewers, Nielsen said."

So it's as high as it has been in the past....

I agree that the particular cast of personalities this year wasn't as compelling, but I don't think the show should be discounted. :)

BronteJd -- I just thought that, due to some bad rules/decisions by the judges, this was the worst crop of contestants ever on AI. I didn't care for any of them, and I don't think any of them will sell big. Hopefully the judges will do better next year.

Arune - My most heartfelt apologies. But I had less to say, so I didn't want to use numbers unnecessarily. That's mean to them. ;)

Also Arune - I was rooting for Jordin of the final two but not because of a dislike of Blake; unlike last year, when I was pulling for Kat, due to my visceral dislike of Taylor. Of course, it should have been Chris last year, but that's a whole different discussion. I found Jordin utterly charming and adorable, and with a great solid voice. She needs more training, but she's going to get that in spades.

Juan - I actually totally disagree re Ruben and Jordin. I didn't think he sounded as good as before, and I still find him remarkably uncharismatic. I'm not sure that anything was "wrong" with Idol this season, unless you're choosing to focus on lower Nielsen ratings, which I think any show that doesn't really vary its format is going to have in its sixth year.

If you want to know, in a nutshell, what was wrong with this Idol season, all you had to look at was the Jordin-Ruben Studdard duet. You had your Season 2 and Season 6 winners singing at the same time, and he just plain blew her off the stage. And I agree that Carrie was unbelievable last night. What a voice.

Also, anyone else heard about the Sanyaja video where he claims to be a college student (with a name other than Sanyaja Malakar) who went on Idol as a class experiment? A local news station -- the Fox affiliate -- plays the video all the time. But the college he claims to attend says neither Sanyaja nor the other name he goes by has ever attended. WEIRD.

Since you asked, I really had no favorites this season, however I thought Chris Sligh would have gone farther then he did. I quickly grew tired of the 'Sangina Show' this year and dropped out of watching most of the season until last night.
The beat-boxing is good in small doses and it was very cool to see Doug E. Fresh, but Jordin is/was clearly the more marketable of the two. And from what I understand she was also a backup singer for Michael W. Smith so there may already be a built-in fan base waiting to buy her CD.
The AI finales are starting to become like the Super Bowl.

Bronte, you dare mess with our numbering! DAMN YOU! ;)

As of last night, Kelly Clarkson is definitely sexier than Carrie Underwood, as the latter is looking way too breakable (IE: too skinny) right now. When Kelly was bouncing around at the end...let's just say I was happy to be watching Idol. :)

And in HD, Kelly looks even sexier.

Who did you all want to win-- Blake or Jordin?

1. Carrie & Kelly are both all kinds of awesome wonderfulness. I heart them, despite their obviously very different outlooks on life. :)

2. Can the Sanjaya thing just be a post-cultural-zeitgeist footnote now? Please? I'll make cookies for people if they can promise me that Sanjaya will just go away.

3. Green Day - I like as a band more more or less, but find their need to pontificate on World Events & Politics a bit overbearing. Just go sing and make cool songs. They do that well.

4. Bette Midler - could.not.sing. What happened to her???

Yeah, I want to buy Taylor's album now, too. Poor guy is being overlooked and written off already, but he's still very cool.

I was watching the show at my sister-in-law's house tonight. She has an HDTV. It was blissful.

1. Carrie's alright, but give me Kelly any day of the week.

2. See above. Oh yeah, curves are very nice.

3. I'll buy Hung's CD before I ever, make that never buy Sangina's.

4. He FF'ed due to being busy clipping more Bed Bath & Beyond coupons for Mrs. VanS.

5. Love the Kitchen, it's almost how I imagine Anthony Bourdian would do it.

Don't blame me...damn, I got nuthin'.
