Shooter is based on a very, very good book called Point of Impact by Steven Hunter. He's a master of the military style thriller. I remember when it came out that people said they changed some of the plot points from the book, but I don't remember anyone saying that they changed the main plot much. That alone should make it a very solid action movie.
