Your Favorite DVD Demo Discs
Here’s an old chestnut of a question:
What DVDs do you use to demo your home theater set-up?
It might be a bit far-reaching to call what I have a home theater as I don’t even have a surround sound system, but it’s always fun to discuss this one, as times have changed since last I asked it.
My answer is still the same, though: THE ROCK, specifically the car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco. I know it inside and out by now and know what the look for.
When I was anticipating the new TV, I also grabbed STAR WARS Episodes 1 and 2, TERMINATOR 2, and X-MEN 2. I figure that, if nothing else, I could write about X-MEN 2 in Pipeline. I probably should have dug up THE FIFTH ELEMENT, too.
A PIXAR movie is a must, as previously discussed, and so I watched CARS over the weekend.
I’ve pulled out LORD OF THE RINGS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK to test out tonight. . .
What discs would you recommend to show off the new TV screen?

This one is more surround sound related, but I find the picture to be pretty good too. I like to use Saving Private Ryan when I want to show someone how nice surround sound is. The opening scenes when they are storming the beach are great because you can hear bullets whizzing around and explosions going off all around you.

When I got my HD TV and new Surround Sound, I used The Incredibles… specifically, the scenes where Dash was running through the jungle, as well as the big fight at the end with the robot.

I like using the lobby scene from The Matrix as well as the freeway battle from Matrix Reloaded. The general consensus amongst my friends is the final big battle in Star Wars Episode II. There’s just a lot going on there.

For testing or showing off surround sound? Pod race in Epi 1. Astroid field in Epi2. Fellowship of the Rings SE. DTS and you can actually hear the blades of grass rub against eachother in the scene where Frodo is waiting for Gandalf.

The fight against the Crazy 88 in Kill Bill Pt 1.
The opening space battle scene in SW Ep III.
The podrace from SW Ep I.

Top Gun. It just seems to be my favorite to show off on a new TV.
