Amazon Marketplace

Does anyone here have experience with selling stuff on the Amazon Marketplace?

I’m looking into it right now as a way to get rid of some of the excess DVDs I’m indexing here at home, but the fees look almost more excessive than eBay’s. They’ll list for free for sixty days, but there’s a one dollar transaction fee, plus it looks like a 15% commission on the final sale price. It almost wouldn’t be worth selling a $5 DVD on there, because you’re only lined up for a $3.25 return. That’s a big cut. A $10 sale nets you $7.50. Lesson to be learned: Sell bigger, or don’t bother.

But, then, maybe the Amazon listing will attract more business than eBay, which charges you for the listing even if it doesn’t sell. I’m not sure.

So, any opinions out there? My ears are open. Thanks!

Augie, I sold MANY TPBs on the site years back and it worked excellent. I took a slight loss, but I found that I could move product easily and quickly, allowing me to make a lot of money off products that were just taking up space.

Ooh, there’s a good idea, too. I have some trades and hardcovers I’d probably be willing to part with, too.

What’s the shipping set-up? Do you dictate the terms when you set up the item?

Yeah, you can choose. I would be wary of international– it’s a pain. As for shipping, if you ship via media mail, you’ll be fine domestically…but international becomes tricky.

Just be willing to take a loss on the the products and you’re fine. Granted, I got most of my TPBS/HCs 30% off at time of purchase, so I didn’t lose much, and when I did, I chalked it up to the nature of business.

At this point, I’m not looking to make my money back on the purchase price. Like you, most of the stuff I’ve picked up has been at a discount. I’ve read it. It’s done its job. It’s taking up valuable space now. Perhaps it’s time to find it a new home. So long as I make a few bucks here and there so that it’s worth my time NOT to just throw stuff out, then I can do it.

Media mail rules. What’s that up to these days? Last time I did it, I think it was only $1.80 to mail a bubble envelope with a DVD in it, but it’s been awhile.

    Augie,

I remember tha Amazon doesn’t quite charge buyers enough for shipping, but it’s not a huge disparity. Just sell it at a reasonable price and if it’s “new,” list it as such– I made $1000 in less than a week when I had “new” products to sell (Stuff I’d never read or didn’t show any weaR).

Use it all the time.. not as much profit potential as Ebay, perhaps, but almost everything always sells.
