New DVD Releases for 24 July 2007

Everything else is a distant second. HARD BOILED is the movie that Hollywood spent the next decade copying.  When that didn’t work out — or Quentin Tarantino was unavailable — they just hired Woo to do Face/Off or Mission: Impossible 2, instead.

It’s one of my favorite movies, for the sheer spectacle of those last 45 minutes or so. Remarkable work.

ZODIAC is a David Fincher movie, so you know it’ll LOOK cool, at least.

Next week: 300. And everything else will be second banana.

My god… I first saw HARD-BOILED at a John Woo film festival in 1993… Ever since I’ve been looking for another film to give me something even remotely close to that particular adrenalin blast.

    Still looking….

(Although let’s face it, THE KILLER is a better movie overall, but nothing can touch HARD-BOILED in terms of sheer action spectacle…)

That last sentence, I think you typed 300 instead of Hot Fuzz.

Doesn’t Hot Fuzz ship next week, too? I’d argue for that over 300 (though I enjoyed them both)

Matthew – THE KILLER might be a little better, yeah, but it’ll always be HARD BOILED that stands out in my mind, for all the same reasons you mention.

Andrew and Adam — I would like to see HOT FUZZ, too, but 300 is a Must See for me first.

Hot Fuzz is one of the few movies I actually must own. The movie is that great. I like Shaun of the Dead but feel that the creators definitely elevated their game with Hot Fuzz.

300, like Sin City before it, demonstrates the strength of comics as a storytelling medium. While the movies are certainly enjoyable and entertaining, the comics are, simply put, better.
