New DVD Releases for 14 Aug 2007
Aug 14
You want the full list? I’ll give you the full list.
Then I give you my highlights:
- Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters (2007)
I hear the kids like this kind of movie.
- The Dark Crystal: 25th Anniversary Edition (2-disc set) (1982)
Can’t go wrong with a Muppet movie, can you?
- Flash Gordon: The Premiere Episode
Early reviews have not been kind to this one. You might be better off watching a rerun on Sci Fi.
- The Fugitive: Season One, Vol. 1 (4-disc set)
I really liked the movie. I remember at the time it came out (1993 or so?), CBS showed the original episode of the series. It was slow. Different times, you know.
- Hamlet: Special Edition (2-disc set) (1996)
This is the version you’re supposed to see. Kenneth Brannagh and all. I’ve never seen it, but should I ever feel the need to brush up on Shakespeare, I think I’ll start here.
- Wild Hogs (2007)
There are way too many motorcycles in the parking lot at work. I work in a den of middle-aged men with small children, I suppose, who just couldn’t afford to go all the way with the Corvette. I know a couple of them are really looking forward to owning this DVD.
No, seriously, the place I work has a separate parking lot for motorcycle parking specifically between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
To each his own. The smoking area out back looks like an all day convention of some sort, too.
Next week: Two very exciting releases: a Criterion edition of Mamet’s HOUSE OF GAMES, plus a new special edition of SERENITY. Come back for that, won’t you?

Don’t forget the Dr. Strange animated movie coming out today! I watched Flash Gordon this past week when it debuted on Sci Fi and thought it wasn’t too bad. Yes, it needs work, but a good starting point. I’ll stick it out a few more episodes and then make a decision.

I’m on the fence about the SERENITY special edition. Loved the movie, currently watching Firefly again, and would love to have it, but it doesn’t seem like the extras warrant another purchase at this time. Am I wrong? It’ll probably sit on my Amazon wish list for a while until a relative decides that it will make a good birthday or Christmas gift.

Run screaming from the Dr. Strange DVD, that’s all I can say. Yikies :(

Oh, and run happily towards that two-disc TAXI DRIVER DVD that came out today as well. Although it doesn’t have that amazing Scorsese commentary from the Criterion laserdisc way back when, it’s got a ton of great stuff. Plus, you know, it’s TAXI DRIVER… a “fairly” decent movie =)

THE LOOKOUT—one of the year’s most underrated films—also hit shelves today. If you didn’t catch it in theatres, be sure to give it a shot on DVD.

Trip – Check out ‘Session 416′ on youtube, it’s one of the extras on the DVD. For me, this is an easy decision, I’m a big fan of Firefly and Serenity, although, I wasn’t happy with a few of the deaths.
Bart – Did you see Brick? Is The Lookout as good as that or better?

I LOVED The Fugitive when it came out. I should at least borrow it to see how it holds up. The movie was one of the few adaptations that doesn’t suck.
