Hi, I am from Singapore and I am also a Macintosh user. I am using Pages now running on Apple iWork 08 and it is fantastic. I have a couple of Brand new Apple iWork 08 available with a good price US$53.00 each plus shipping of US$7.99 to all Macintosh users.
If any one of you are interested to purchase them, you can drop me an email directly at bazaaronlineshop@yahoo.com.sg. I accept Paypal.
You will definitely love Pages when you load it in. See the difference of Words compared to Pages !. Cheers, phil

Dave - Honestly, if she already has a Mac-compatible version of Office and she's doing school work with it, she might as well stick with it.

The PowerPoint-like program is called Keynote. I've heard nothing but great things about it -- heck, Al Gore used it for his global warming movie. So it has some credibility. (I'll just bite my tongue on the politics therein.) I've never used it because, thankfully, I have no need for it at work.

I'm buying my daughter a new Mac this week for college. She has 'Office 04' already, but would iWork be even better? Has anyone used the 'Powerpoint' part of it?

Jeff,

I've looked at some LaTeX based solutions (to equations) before, but I want the ability to edit the equation without leaving the word processor. PDFs or postscript files or gifs don't get me there.

I've been using Pages and Numbers exclusively as well for the past couple weeks. They're amazing! I love the speed and cleanliness of the interface. I encourage everyone to buy it.

And, FWIW, Pages does have Mail Merging. It integrates perfectly with Address Book. =) But again, if you don't need it, it doesn't but you about it.

Bill,

If you know/use LaTeX, there's a wonderful little app called LaTeX Equation Editor that will create PDFs of equations -- I've used it to paste into Keynote, so I'm guessing it would work in Pages as well.

Bill - I just started playing with Numbers and it's been very nice so far. I like some of the visual tics it has --- like not showing the column and row numbers until you click inside the spreadsheet. Thankfully, I haven't had any problems with formulas or equations. I have a couple of more advanced spreadsheets I haven't thrown at it yet.

I don't know if Word had what you're asking for, though.

Jason - Yeah, I've ignored the grammar checker so far, though I had my problems with Word's, too. I tend to write very conversationally, so I ignored most of the grammar "fixes," anyway.

I use Pages too, but only because the last version of office runs like ass in rosetta (I can't even print in Word, because my printer drivers aren't recognized). Pages got a lot better this year, but the grammar checker still needs work. A lot of work.

Numbers has worked really well for me as an Excel replacement. I'd have Office off my new iMac, but Pages doesn't seem to have an equation editor (needed for work) and Keynote doesn't seem to like my existing PowerPoint presentations. I really like Pages' "Paste and Match Style". Did Word have this and I just didn't know?
