New DVD Releases for 22 Jan 2008

This is what you have to look forward to at Best Buy today:

  • Blonde Ambition

It’s got Jessica Simpson in it, so you know you don’t want this one. OK, maybe it’s a train wreck entertainment thing. At least her boyfriend du jour isn’t in it with her.

  • The Game Plan

It’s The Rock Dwayne Johnson. And this time, he’s a football guy of some sort.  Surrounded by cute kids.  Gak!

  • Torchwood: The Complete First Season

I have a feeling that the kind of people who read this blog are the demographic for buyers of Doctor Who spin-off stuff.

  • Sydney White

Amanda Bynes does a modern version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Heaven help me, but it actually sounds interesting.

  • Saw IV

I was amazed that The Game Plan had already hit DVD. I barely remember seeing any trailers on TV for its theatrical release.

The Rock and kids ??? No thank you !! Mr. Dwayne Johnson is testing the waters of how many stupid kid’s films he can do and still remain cool. We give him one more shot after this- and then he’s a write-off.

Saw IV - you’ll enjoy if you liked the first 3 of them. This is more Jigsaw’s backstory than anything else, as he did die in the last film - and yes, is still dead. Sadly, they decide to add a new Jigsaw to the mix -and it’s really nobody interesting at all.

As for Torchwood .. while I do love the new millenium’s version of the Doctor Who series … this series is amazing in it’s own right, no prior “Who”-devotion is needed. Imagine X-Files meets CSI meets Doctor WHo - add a whole bunch of sex, violence and great writing - and you have Torchwood. I can’t recommend this series enough.

Game Plan was a big hit for Disney though, and I believe it’s also The Rock’s biggest hit as well. This will sell like gangbusters on DVD for sure. Must avoid? Perhaps… WHOA Heath Ledger died?!?1

Augie, I know you are totally swamped and behind on DVDs for all eternity, but you would LOVE the new Doctor Who series. Fantastic writing and acting, great storylines, etc. It really is up your alley. And Torchwood is fantastic as well, albeit a bit more dark and adult in tone.

  5. Matthew M Says:

Hey Rob, thanks for the SPOILER WARNING on Saw IV there. =(

  6. Trip Bakun Says:

I second everything Patricia said about Doctor Who. Never watched it until the recent incarnation and am hooked!

I heard varying opinions of Torchwood though…

  7. Nick H Says:

Varying opinions? Here in the UK, Torchwood is universally reviled and mocked. Mere words cannot suffice to describe its badness.
